In Tritsch Tratsch followed in 1981 another appearance with the song Dual relationship (of a man with his car). The debut album I never wanted to be one of those appeared in May of the same year, but did not achieve very high sales for the time being.

Months later, in August 1981, he landed with Strada del sole (in a similar style, about a "vacation relationship box") became the Austrian summer hit of the year. In total, the single sold 99.000 times in Austria, which would correspond to the current status of triple platinum. The second album was equally successful And everything is completely different word’n. With Schickeria and Topless followed in 1982 the next number one hits. At that time, Fendrich was already known as Shooting star of Austropop celebrated.

In 1983 Fendrich presented his first compilation called A tiny drop of time. He also performed with Wolfgang Ambros at the school closing open air in Vienna’s Hanappi Stadium in the same year. This concert was included on a live compilation with the album Open Air published.

With Up and Away. Fendrich achieved another success in 1983. Although the longplayer could not quite meet the commercial expectations of the previous album and the singles did not manage to do so either, Fendrich performed at several sold-out concerts on his tour. This led to the song Weus d’ a Herz hast wia a Bergwerk was available twice as a single in a studio and in a live version.

After a short retreat from the public appeared in 1985 and 1986 the albums Vienna by night and No Beautiful Country. In addition, they brought a further live compilation on the market.

[edit] Breakthrough in Germany

In addition, it was followed by the big breakthrough in Germany with number 2. also reached a top 3 position in Switzerland. Until today the song is considered a popular party song. It was still surprising at the time, since the song was sung purely in Viennese.

In Austria and Germany equally well known is his performance with Reinhard Mey, with A hole in the pot in the television show What if (1988).

1989 appeared the longplayer From Time to Time, which could not fulfill the commercial expectations of Fendrich by far. Also the spin-offs From time to time and I Am From Austria turned out to be a flop. What was not counted on at that time was the fact that I Am From Austria years later as a popular unofficial national anthem of Austria (see National anthem).

1991 the album Nix is fix, produced by Tato Gomez at BMG Ariola, was released, which could repeat the success of earlier times. The album was able to stay in the Austrian charts for 32 weeks and was number 1 for five weeks.

A year later, Fendrich performed at the opening of the Vienna Festival with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra. This concert was released as an album and surprisingly made it to the first place after some time.

1993 Fendrich took over after Rudi Carrell the moderation of the ARD broadcast Herzblatt. In the same year he started the comedy show Nothing is fixed (ORF/ARD). However, the cabaret and media-critical format was not continued despite good reviews. [3]

Along the way the album Brothers which was able to place in Germany again after a long time. Even the singles rather unpopular in Austria Midlife Crisis and Brothers made it into the German charts. At that time, despite the great commercial success, the album was rather negatively received by the media in Fendrich’s home country. The reason was that with this longplayer Fendrich slowly turned away from the Viennese dialect. As a promotional campaign to Herzblatt also became the ballads album Songs with feeling presented.

Musically, Fendrich was not heard from for a long time in the mid-1990s. His big comeback came with the album Blond. The title track to this album was also to be his last major number one hit to date. The single Blond was released in Austria 10.000 copies sold and was awarded gold. In addition, after the program reform of the most popular Austrian station Hitradio o3, the song was played as one of the few Austrian songs on the radio.

[edit] Return to Austria
