Can you freeze and defrost smoked salmon?

You took too much smoked salmon last time you went shopping and now you have some of the salmon left over, for example from the holiday dinner? The question arises: Can you freeze smoked salmon?? The simple answer is: Yes. However, there are some things you should be aware of when freezing smoked salmon.

Salmon and smoked salmon are popular delicacies – not only at Christmas time. In the refrigerator, smoked salmon will keep unopened for just under two weeks. However, you should not store an opened package for a long time, but consume it the next day at the latest.

If you have miscalculated your purchase or meal planning, you may have more smoked salmon left than you thought. So the question is whether you can also freeze the smoked salmon and defrost it again at a later time?

In short: Yes, in principle this is possible without any problems. But only if you keep some points in mind. Because smoked salmon is a sensitive food on which dangerous bacteria and germs can easily form.

The expiration date is already approaching and you would like to store your smoked salmon longer? In this case, it’s not a good idea! You should only freeze smoked salmon when it is still fresh well away from the use-by date is.

Smoked salmon in the test: Which salmon should I buy??

We have tested smoked salmon from aquaculture (i.e. farmed salmon) and smoked wild salmon. In the laboratory we had all products tested for undesirable ingredients. Among other things, this involved heavy metals such as cadmium, lead or mercury and germ contamination.

Our smoked salmon test shows: The ingredients are often top, the taste not so much. Animal welfare? This is a longer story. That much in a nutshell: handling salmon is no better than factory farming on land. Disgusting: A few products contained a relatively large number of dead worms.

Defrosting smoked salmon gently

Thawing of smoked salmon should be done as gently as possible. The best way to thaw frozen smoked salmon is to place it in the refrigerator overnight. It retains its structure and consistency.

If the thawed smoked salmon smells unpleasant, you’d better dispose of it. Even if you discover gray spots or a smear layer, the fish is (unfortunately) a case for the garbage can. If the salmon is spoiled or infested with germs, there is a risk of food poisoning – you should avoid this risk at all costs.
