How to take photos properly with an slr (part 2 – kos zia)

How to photograph properly SLR

Correct photographing with the single lens reflex – what does it mean?

In principle you probably want beautiful pictures like from a professional – but without being a professional photographer.

Is it possible at all?

Because it’s basically much easier than most people think. Especially if you follow the 6 building blocks of photography.

Proper photography SLR - 6 building blocks of photography

So watch what you say as a photography beginner on the subject of "Photograph properly" and in handling your single-lens reflex camera (DSLR) should absolutely consider:

Why your camera equipment is not the most important thing – but most people think so

Besides children’s photography, I am also a wedding photographer. That’s when it’s important to have a big heavy camera with you.

Simply so that my customers and also the guests take me seriously.

But privately as an amateur photographer no one needs that to shoot properly.

Do you need a big car to learn to drive properly? No. On the contrary!

Because with a big car you have so much additional equipment, which only distracts you from the core of driving with gas, brake, clutch.

All these pictures here on KOS were taken with my 10-year old Canon EOS 350D (incl. the camera). cheap bundle lens Canon EFS 18-55mm).

This part of the photo shoot was taken on the grounds of the old water mill on KOS in the mountain town of Zia. In the "Watermill" is homemade lemon juice the absolute house specialty.

This refreshing cocktail tastes especially good in this very loving ambience and with sea view, of course.

Hence my tip: Get a small used SLR camera for beginners to learn how to take photos properly.

Later, when you have gained some experience, you may also satisfy your ego and buy yourself a big SLR camera.

You’ll be disappointed, though, because nothing will change in your photos for now. You will make greater progress if you learn more about the 6 building blocks of photography.

Take a look at my video, in which I go into more points about the right photography:

What everyone should know about full auto mode

Unfortunately, I have to tell you the truth:

With the full automatic mode you will soon pack your beloved SLR camera into the closet and use your smartphone again for taking pictures.

You won’t see a big difference between the pictures of your smartphone and those of your new SLR camera.

Yes, that’s how it is most of the time in full automatic mode. Unfortunately.

In full auto mode you simply have no control.

No control over the all-important aperture game with depth of field. With it you expose your motives and let the background disappear nicely in the blur.

Therefore, please always photograph in the aperture priority and do not waste any more time with the Full automatic mode.

UPDATE:

On the coming evenings I will show you how to take photos like this without full automatic!

No control over the right focus point. Your camera just picks any point that is closest to your camera. Not but controlled and targeted z.B. focus on the peppermint as shown in the picture above.

Therefore, you should also take a look at the AF measuring fields – or have the few correct settings explained to you step-by-step in my online photo course.

You do not have to adjust many things. Much less than you think. Very rarely change the ISO value.

But the rest I leave 90% always the same to photograph properly with the SLR.

So this is done quickly. You should then leave the technical stuff behind relatively quickly in order to learn to photograph properly.

Why light and subject choice are much more important than technique

When you have your driver’s license and have mastered the technique of your car, then the art of good driving begins:

  • To see the traffic correctly (light) and
  • Assess situations (motif selection) early on

Yes, with light and motives you should occupy the predominant time. Therein lies the art of proper photography.

And these are also the two most important elements of the 6 building blocks of photography to shoot properly with a SLR camera.

(Even if all beginners think again and again that the camera should get the most attention, in order to photograph correctly with the SLR).)

With my pictures you will never recognize with which camera I have shot them. Intuitively you would assume that I, as a professional photographer, have a great big SLR camera.

Yes, I have those too – but here at these shoots and in my photo online course for parents I use exclusively my old Canon EOS 350D.

You should understand that you can do it too. With such simple equipment.

  • No magic. No better camera than you.
  • Just a little more knowhow in using the 6 building blocks.
  • That is the secret, if you should look for a secret..

School your photographer’s eye with storytelling

Here’s where photography with your SLR camera starts to be really fun.

Because now you can start thinking up little picture stories in your head and then capture them with different perspectives.

Like I did here. Focus on how you can tell your picture story most impressively from different angles.

Alternate between portrait and landscape format to make your photos more interesting in the presentation later on (e.g. in the photo gallery).B. to arrange in a photo book or a picture collage).

A very effective storytelling exercise

Just do this exercise and shoot 2 pictures of the same subject:

  1. Once in portrait format very close up to bring out details.
  2. And another picture a little more from a distance to show the context.
  3. Then pack the whole z.B. with the tools fotor.com into a mini picture collage

Correct-photography-mirror reflex

And you have already told a small but impressive story with two pictures.

You can learn to take really good pictures with it.

Use image enhancement for true miracles

With image enhancement I don’t mean that you should completely edit the character of your image.

In my wedding shoots, I usually have to improve 800 pictures in a short time. This really has to be done in a jiffy.

But it is enormously important.

I use it to quickly adjust the different lighting conditions and color temperatures. Then you get a nice brightly shining and uniformly coherent overall picture.

This is important to me, because a happy bright mood should also be created for the viewer. And it is also part of my photography style.

So to photograph correctly means to pay attention to the totality of the 6 building blocks.

With each (!) to pay attention to the few relevant elements of the 6 building blocks will bring you 1000 times further than to know all the functions of your camera (i.e. only one building block).

Don’t be afraid to practice with your camera to learn how to take pictures properly

Many parents write me again and again, they do not dare to get out of the full automatic mode.

Maybe you feel the same way?

Do you want to take real pictures or not?

Then leave the full automatic mode from now on and use the aperture priority as already mentioned above:

  1. Only with this you have the chance to get to know your camera.
  2. Only with this it is worth to use a reflex camera at all and to take pictures with it properly.

You cannot break anything. Just start practicing and look for small stories that can be translated from z.B. Consist of 2-4 images.

Photograph properly mirror reflex

Either photograph the same motive from different perspectives correctly or think up a small story, like here with the cocktail.

  1. I promise you that you will learn to take photos properly with it.
  2. This is what photography is all about and you will have great fun doing it.

Photograph your stories and completely rediscover the world in the process. Over time, even without a camera, you’ll continually discover little stories in your surroundings and daily life.
