A good resume is the be-all and end-all of your application. In this article you will find tips, examples and samples.

A perfect resume is the be-all and end-all for every application. Personnel managers sift through tens of applications every month and often make their decisions in a fraction of a second. Nowadays, software is also used to make a preliminary selection. The importance of the tabular resume can hardly be overestimated.

It is your calling card when you are looking for a job and quickly shows whether you fit the advertised position – or not or not. If you make a point of sending a perfect resume, you have a good chance of being invited to an interview. We give you the tips and resume templates you need to make your resume stand out from the crowd. You will also find numerous samples and examples in this article.

This awaits you in our guide to the tabular resume:

Why the tabular resume is so important

Many people, especially engineers, go to great lengths to promote themselves in the cover letter of their application. The most important document in a job application is the resume. Before a personnel officer even reads the cover letter, he looks at the tabular resume.

  • Why? The resume immediately reveals whether a person is suitable for the job or not. And efficiency is required when preselecting from hundreds of applications.

It should be clear that particular attention should be paid to the resume when applying for a job no matter if you apply with a classical application portfolio or electronically. With the Curriculum Vitae or short CV it depends on many small aspects with which you can convince. If you stick to certain formalities regarding structure, wording and formatting of your resume, you increase your chances that your application will not be rejected immediately. Despite all the tips for your own resume, it should be clear that many things can be optimized, but what has worked so far in your life is fixed and cannot be changed so quickly.

Even if you have applied electronically, you should be able to present a printed copy of your resume at the interview. Photo: panthermedia.net/pp76

What belongs in the resume?

It is important that the resume lists the entire education and all professional stations. In this context, complete means that the curriculum vitae represents the chronological sequence of your career as far as possible without any major gaps. This does not mean that you have to list, for example, all internships from your school years. Ultimately, a certain relevance for the potential employer is also decisive.

The perfect resume should always contain certain information that is important for the employer to get a picture of you. We have listed the individual components of the Curriculum Vitae for you below:

Job search for engineers

What absolutely belongs in the resume:

  • Personal data
  • Professional stations
  • Last school-leaving certificate/any other educational qualifications such as studies (highest degree)/vocational training
  • Special skills, if relevant
  • Place/date and your signature

What additional things you can include on your resume:

  • A portrait photo In some countries it is unusual or even undesirable (e.g. in the USA), but in this country it is still standard
  • Internships
  • Additional qualifications
  • If necessary. Periods of unemployment
  • If applicable. Parental leave or equivalent
  • Interests and hobbies- Make sure here that you mention hobbies and interests that are relevant to the job/position you are applying for, or that tell the recruiter more about your personality and skills

How bad is a gap in the curriculum vitae?

A curriculum vitae should be complete, but it is not always possible to have a complete gap. Short gaps of a few weeks will not make a recruiter suspicious. If a gap is longer and perhaps spans months or even years, then it looks quite different.

This may have been, for example, a backpacker year during college, a long physical or mental illness, caring for dependents, or unemployment. It is crucial that you do not conceal such gaps or try to gloss over everything. A clear edge is preferable to any recruiter than a lot of guesswork.

So don’t try to remove gaps from your resume by, for example, only using rough time periods of the year instead of exact times. Similarly, you should not get carried away with sprucing things up linguistically. The backpacker year in Southeast Asia is not necessarily a "cultural education stay" or similar. However, a backpacker year or similar does not necessarily go down badly with the personnel officer: It can, for example, distinguish you as a cosmopolitan, curious person with initiative.

In the case of illnesses, you do not have to give precise details. What you are ill with is none of the potential employer’s business.

Resume template: structure and layout How to write a good resume?

A curriculum vitae is basically quite simple in structure. When structuring your resume, you can use the following pattern as a guide:

  1. First and last name, birthday, place of birth, address and contact details are at the top of the list. The application photo is also placed there, if one is to be sent with the application.
  2. Tabular listing of your professional career
  3. Tabular listing of your education. These include: School, studies, internships and professional training
  4. Tabular list of your additional qualifications
  5. Tabular list of your private commitments. Here you should also pay attention to the relevance for the potential employer
  6. Finally follow the date, place and handwritten signature under the resume.

When it comes to building your resume, some things are standardized. So at the top you will always find the name, contact details and Co. At the bottom is usually placed the signature. Otherwise, the structure is not set in stone. It is important that the structure is logical and comprehensible for the personnel officer.

Template: How to present your career in a CV

The professional history is the most important part of your resume. And to present the perfect resume, here are some things you should keep in mind.

The table is best laid out in two columns. On the left are the time details. It is sufficient to mention the month and year, you do not need to mention the exact date. You should start with your last professional station, i.e. if applicable. the current position. It is at the top, then it continues in descending chronological order.

On the right is a brief description of the position. Here you should not formulate complete sentences, but concise keywords. You must indicate your position, the employer with company form and the location. When formulating your application, be sure to use precise and common terms.

Here it is also worthwhile to do some research beforehand. If you have changed positions or areas of responsibility more frequently in the same company, it is advisable to mention these changes indented below it. This way the potential new employer can see how long you have worked for the company and at the same time see how your career has progressed. Outline in bullet points also roughly your field of activity, if this can sharpen your profile:

  • What were and are you responsible for?
  • What are your daily tasks?
  • You may also be able to elegantly refer to soft skills at this point.

The training phase is often given its own table or a separate table section. You do not necessarily have to mention grades in school reports. Otherwise, stick to the guidelines here regarding professional stations. The structure is identical.

This is what you should do without in your resume

Your resume should be complete, but you can do without a few things. For example, the profession of one’s parents is no longer mentioned today. A conceivable exception: The parents were already employed in the same company for many years, this could suggest family ties to the company. In the case of your training, you can also leave it at the highest school leaving certificate. The elementary school does not have to be mentioned. Exception: it was something special, such as if you attended an international school abroad.

Resume with format: how to format a CV?

The formatting of your resume, i.e. the layout and design, have lost some of their importance in the meantime. With the use of application management software, applications are often digitized, reformatted and pre-sorted. The CVs are then in a standardized format.

Nevertheless, you should put time and thought into the formatting of your resume:

  • For the font, you should use a common font such as Times New Roman or Arial. For the font size, choose 12 point (Times New Roman) or 11 point (Arial). It is also important that you use one font throughout.
  • ÜBold or underline headings and choose a font size that is three points larger than the body text. Üheadings can be left-aligned or centered. The main heading with "Curriculum vitae can be 16 points and should be bolded. Emphasis such as bold, italics, or underlining can help with outline, but should be used sparingly.
  • In the header of the document you should enter your contact details. The header remains the same for all pages of the document. The name can be a little larger than the normal font.
  • The address, e-mail address and telephone number should be the same size as the body text. You can separate the elements by spacing or dashes. Leave enough space in the body text below for the application photo before you start with the actual resume.
  • The tables for your professional history in the resume are best formatted in two columns. The left column is for the dates. This column can be narrower than the column with your position details. The date should be left-aligned and can also be bolded. Flat type is recommended here rather than justified type, as the spacing between words is unattractively large can have the following effect. The other elements of the resume follow the same pattern. In total, your resume should not exceed three pages.
  • It is helpful to use templates and samples for the formatting of the resume. You can find templates and samples to download at the end of this article.

The application photo in the resume

Even though anonymous applications are quite possible and there is no obligation for an application photo, many recruiters still expect a resume with an application photo. According to a study by the consulting firm Kienbaum, an application without a photo is not well received by 82 percent of HR people: They feel that an application without a picture is incomplete. If, on the other hand, you are applying for a job in the USA, for example, you should rather do without a photo. Read also our tips for cover letters in English.

It is important that the photo should be of good quality. A printout from your home printer should therefore be avoided, as should a selfie that you took with your smartphone. In addition, it should usually be a color photo.

It is best to have the picture taken by a professional. There are no size requirements. But it should be something between passport photo and XL format. Portrait format is often used, but in recent years the landscape format has also become established- It can be attached to your resume with adhesive dots and if it should fall off, it is recommended that you write your name on the back of the photo.

Already clearly better. Whether landscape or portrait format is a matter of taste. Currently, landscape formats are more in vogue for photos in the resume. Photo: panthermedia.net/goenz

Already much better. Whether landscape or portrait format is a matter of taste. Currently, landscape formats are more in vogue for photos in the resume.

However, there are also great differences in quality among photographers. For the selection, you should first pay attention to the focus of the photographer’s work. Specializing in portraits for ID cards or as an event and wedding photographer can lead to application photos- even if they are almost always listed in the portfolio- That certain something is missing.

Therefore a look at the homepage of the photographer is worthwhile. Do the work examples shown there always correspond more or less to the same style? In this case, another photographer who shows more creativity would probably be a better choice. For example, application photos do not automatically have to be taken in a studio. For engineers in particular, a futuristic house facade can be just as good or even better as a background.

Submitting application documents electronically

Sending your application documents by mail was the classic procedure for a very long time. Many companies nowadays want to receive an application by e-mail. More and more often, however, it is the case that applications are uploaded via special portals of the companies.

Further topics on the subject of applications and job search:

Here it is quite common that the cover letter and the curriculum vitae have to be entered via prefabricated forms. While this takes some of the creativity out of creating a resume, it shouldn’t distract you from the fact that diligence is key here, too. When filling out such forms, you should concentrate on the task at hand and follow the same rules as for the classic resume. You have to upload certificates, diplomas and the application photo mostly as a PDF document or jpg file.

Xing, LinkedIn and Co.: The resume in the social networks

Career portals like Xing and LinkedIn are becoming increasingly important in the world of work. You should give your resume in these portals a similar importance as the resume that accompanies your application. In the first step of an application this may not be relevant yet. But if you made it through the pre-selection, then you can be sure that the recruiters will also take a look at your profiles in these social networks.

Accordingly, you should make sure that the information on the forms is always up to date and just as conscientious as the classic resume. You should pay special attention to the fact that both resumes are identical. Anyone who makes contradictory statements here will definitely create irritation. You should avoid this at all costs.

Another advantage of career portals is that you can use additional references to emphasize your skills and give you more credibility. It is somewhat advantageous when employers, colleagues or customers, for example, confirm your competencies and write comments on LinkedIn. This is positive self-marketing. Additional engagement via your own posts or participation in discussions can also give recruiters a positive impression about your professional competence and enhances your professional network.
