Who is affected?
All age groups are affected, from newborns to 17-year-olds, and children of all genders. In some cases, even under-21s are in particular need of protection, for example from sexual exploitation in prostitution.

Appearance-forms

Victims are often not recognized as victims!
In the international context, "child trafficking" is clearly defined under the Optional Protocol to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. In the German Criminal Code (StGB), on the other hand, the term "trafficking in children" only covers adoption trafficking according to §236 StGB. The majority of the relevant forms of exploitation of trafficking in children can therefore be found in the StGB under other terms and paragraphs. This means that children affected by violence are repeatedly not perceived as victims of human trafficking.

International studies provide only approximate figures

Europe
For the European area, Eurostat reports 30 in 2010-2012.146 officially registered cases of human trafficking. Of these, 80 percent were female, 16 percent were minors, and two percent were between zero and eleven years old.

Germany
There are no comprehensive case figures and statistics for Germany, as the judiciary does not collect data on criminal proceedings relating to trafficking in minors, or on trafficking in children. Published. The only reliable figures are provided by the Federal Situation Report on Human Trafficking of the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA). However, it only contains data from completed investigation procedures.

Case figures from 2019 (Germany)

Investigations in the area of trafficking in human beings for sexual exploitation show a decrease of 19.4% compared to the previous year. 427 trafficked persons were identified in a total of 287 proceedings. Every third person affected was under 21, every seventh was a minor. 158 minors have been identified in 122 proceedings. Here, too, there is a decrease of 18.1% in the number of proceedings (2018: 149). One reason for this may be the increasing importance of prostitution sites that are difficult to control, such as prostitutes.B. private dwellings and lead to an increase in the number of cases under investigation.
The loverboy method continues to play a significant role in the recruitment and deception of minors and young women. But contact initiation via the Internet has also become a significant factor over the last few years.

The BKA emphasizes: "In particular, the victim group of minors and adolescents must be protected from exploitation with special combating and prevention measures across all authorities. The modus operandi and circumstances that perpetrators take advantage of to exploit minors in different ways are important starting points for effectively combating the phenomenon. For this reason, the project to combat the exploitation of minors and adolescents is of great importance. Initiatives such as the federal cooperation concept ‘Protection and Assistance in the Case of Trafficking in and Exploitation of Children’, which was developed together with the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth, are further important building blocks."
