Nuremberg – A mix of drugs and medication caused a Nuremberg woman to become delusional: She imagined she was being mugged. To protect her daughter, she pushed the five-year-old out of the window of a second-floor apartment.

"Mom, Mom, Mom" the little girl whimpered – at the same time, the desperate cries of her mother echoed through the backyard of an apartment building in Nuremberg’s Sudstadt district. It was 6 o’clock in the morning, Heidi L., then 29 years old, stood screaming at the window. She held her daughter out.

A neighbor also leaned out of the window, the windows of her second-floor apartment are immediately adjacent to the neighbor’s apartment. She tried to kill Heidi L. (name changed). But in vain. She had to watch as the little girl was killed on that morning of 26. April 2021 plunged from a height of 7.80 meters into the depths.

After window collapse in Gibitzenhof: Girl’s life still in danger

"The woman lifted the child onto the window ledge and then simply dropped it. The woman was obviously unresponsive. It was quite clear that she was in panic", recalls that neighbor today, about nine months later, in front of the 16-year-old jury. Criminal Chamber of the Nuremberg-Furth Regional Court.

Woman climbed onto the window sill

A neighbor, who had just fetched his bicycle from the cellar and was on his way to work, also witnessed the tragedy. The child was already lying strangely twisted in the backyard, he describes, there was Heidi L. suddenly climbed onto the ledge of the open window herself.

On the second floor, the neighbor could not punish the panic-stricken Heidi L. just keep her from jumping out of the window herself; other neighbors alerted the emergency services. The little girl had suffered severe internal injuries and a number of fractures, in the Sudklinikum the doctors were able to save his life – today the child lives with a foster family.

Psychosis induced by drugs

She loves her daughterabove everything, says Heidi L. in court. With the help of her lawyer Michael Lowe, she admits to the charge, but also complains of memory lapses. Since the crime, she has been housed in the Forensic Clinic for Psychiatry in Taufkirchen, where she says she wants to finally get her addiction under control.

It was a disastrous mix of drugs and medication that caused then 29-year-old Heidi L. triggered a psychosis. Three days before the tragedy, on Friday, she had, as she herself describes it, swallowed 100 milligrams of Tramal and 150 milligrams of pregabalin, a painkiller and an antiepileptic drug. She had also consumed 20 milligrams of methamphetamine.

Penalties, types, statistics: All about the illegal world of drugs

Burglar in the apartment as a delusion

That weekend, she had visited her parents in Nuremberg’s Sudstadt and kept quiet about the fact that she had relapsed – but then came the hallucinations.

In the night from Sunday to Monday she panicked. She was convinced that at least one to three burglars, armed with knives and pistols, were on their way into her bedroom. She wanted to barricade herself and pushed a chest of drawers in front of the room door, the piece of furniture was supposed to stop the supposed attackers.

"drunken stupor" – a paragraph as an auxiliary construction

Today Heidi L. contrite in court. She fights with tears. She had never wanted to cause pain to her daughter, she loved her little girl, she hoped very much for a future with her child. The district court found Heidi L. The girl is now living with a foster family.

"drunk out of her mind is the accusation of the prosecution, an auxiliary construction in the penal code. Psychiatrist in demand as expert witness

And this means that Heidi L. cannot be punished because of her violent act, but because of the drunken stupor. The Nuremberg-Furth Regional Court will rule on the condition of Heidi L.
