Lauf – A hospital does not always have something to do with "sick" but is also part of new life. The obstetrics ward at Lauf hospital has now received an important donation.

"To be able to help in the region, that’s just great", says Florian Gunther, founder and managing director of the company "Investorenausbildung" from Hersbruck, who donated 6000 Euro for the maternity ward of the hospital in Lauf.

Just in December, a baby son, David, was born – he was the 789th. Newborns in Lauf in 2021. Gunther’s daughter Timea also saw the light of day in the Lauf delivery room in 2008. Therefore, Gunther and his family feel very connected with the Laufer maternity ward. Gunther heard about the appeal for donations from an article in the Pegnitz newspaper and from Christine Kievernagel from the maternity ward: "We are happy to be able to help."

From the donation, the ward has already been able to purchase another attachment for the new warming cribs as well as a second so-called "BILI lamp". Irradiation with the lamp accelerates the breakdown of bilirubin, which causes jaundice in newborns, in the baby’s skin, explains head physician Dr. Valentin Klant.

823 births in 2021

Since the donation is not yet exhausted with these purchases, the team of the obstetrics ward is thinking about what else they can purchase for the future. They will certainly need the money, because the number of births is increasing. 823 children were born at Lauf hospital in 2021, or about 2.1 births per day.

"This is the highest number we’ve ever had and reinforces the decision five years ago to convert the voucher department to a main department," says Dr. Thomas Gruneberg, Managing Director of Krankenhaus GmbH. "We are always happy when citizens support us so that we can best carry out our tasks. Donations like this make it possible to invest in something more than is absolutely necessary. That gives security."

He is particularly pleased that the donation is intended for obstetrics in particular: "Obstetrics is a really great subject, because a hospital always has a lot to do with being sick, but that is only one part of life, the other part is the birth, the new. It’s also a great experience for us to be part of something new," says Gruneberg.

Adolf Pohl, treasurer of the Forderverein Krankenhaus Lauf, joins in and is pleased about the donation. "The support association is always eager to do something good at the Lauf hospital. We are all the more pleased about what happened over Christmas, because almost 11,000 euros in donations were received," says Pohl. Üt this time, he has also noticed that more and more targeted donations are reaching them, which makes him happy. "We hope to make a big difference this year," says Pohl.
