Hidemyass! Free vpn proxy unblocker review

Hidemyass! Free vpn proxy unblocker review

Finding free proxy servers can be a dangerous game. There are many providers out there, but who can you trust? It is hard to say.

One answer might be to avoid those services you found on a website linked from another link from a random tweet you read the other day, and instead focus on finding a real provider with a real track record.

HideMyAss was founded in 2005 and has one of the longest track records in the privacy business since its inception in 2005. You’ll know the company as a top VPN provider, but what you may not know is that it started as a free proxy service and HideMyAss! still offers free proxies today.

HideMyAss! Offers a few ways to access its free proxy service.

The easiest way to do this is to point your browser to its proxy page.

There are proxies in six locations: Czech Republic, Germany, Netherlands, UK, USA (New York), USA (Seattle).

Additional privacy features include options to hide the destination link from snoopers, remove scripts and disable cookies.

This can be a convenient way to unblock simple websites. If you are excluded from a US website, visit the HideMyAss! Proxy, select New York or Seattle locations and try to access the destination URL.

Unfortunately, websites you access through the website proxy don’t get regular JavaScript support, and many don’t work properly. For the best results, you need to take HideMyAss! second proxy route.

HMA VPN Proxy Unblocker

HideMyAss! VPN Proxy Unblocker is a free Chrome extension that gives you easy access to HideMyAss! proxy servers from anywhere.

The extension works much like a VPN app. Choose a location (France, Germany, Netherlands, UK and USA are on offer) and your browsing traffic will be blocked via a HideMyAss! Server in this country. If a website states that you cannot access certain content because it is not available in your region, this can be helpful.

Features include "Auto Hide," which automatically connects you to a location when you visit a particular website (for example, you could connect your browser to a U.S. server whenever you go to Netflix.Access com.)

Elsewhere, a WebRTC blocker reduces the likelihood of an IP leak (even when using a VPN) and a tab killer provides a hotkey to instantly hide your open browser tabs (very handy if you don’t want your boss to see exactly where you are browsing right now.)

Note, however, that this is a proxy browser extension, not a full VPN. It routes your browser traffic through a remote server to give you a new IP, but it’s not encrypted, and traffic from your system and other apps is not affected at all.

Netflix

Unblock

Although HideMyAss! VPN Proxy Unblocker is easy to use, there were some problems and irritations during the test.

You need to create a free HideMyAss! Account, for example, to use the extension. Even when we signed in with this account, we were occasionally prompted to enter a username and password to access a site. And after logging in, it kept recommending us to buy the real VPN.

According to HideMyAss! the extension unlocks any blocked website, but that was not our experience. For example, when we tried BBC iPlayer, the site warned that it only works in the UK, and refused to stream content. And Amazon Prime Video recognized what we were doing and displayed its standard warning message, "Your device is connected to the Internet through a VPN or proxy service. Please disable it and try again.’

Our Netflix results were marginally better as the site allowed us to stream UK content from our UK base while VPN Proxy Unblocker was connected. But it didn’t unlock US Netflix, and we couldn’t access content only in the US.

Although these are bad results, they are also not a big surprise. Most top streaming sites these days have strong VPN defenses and even full HideMyAss! VPN failed to unblock Netflix or Amazon Prime in a recent review (though it did beat iPlayer).

However, this does not mean that VPN Proxy Unblocker will fail everywhere. We found that it correctly gave us IP addresses from our selected country, and it is likely that the extension will take you to many less well-protected websites.

Final verdict

HideMyAss! The free proxy is simple and straightforward, but it didn’t unblock any of the popular sites we tried. You may have better luck (at least it’s quick and easy to try.)
