Pepper spray, water cannon, bottles thrown – these were some of the images from last week’s Corona protests. Several thousand people had taken part in the demonstrations against the Corona measures, several hundred in turn in the counter-protest. After riots in Rostock, Monday night was supposed to be more peaceful this time, a demonstration march was not even announced. But also the meeting at the city port could not take place as planned. This was announced by the police in the early evening, among other things, via the news service Twitter.

Resolution even before the start

On the Haedge peninsula, the opponents of the measures had announced a kind of street party. However, even before the planned start at 6 p.m., the organizers had announced that they would not open the event. The decision was justified by the fact that he had not been allocated the desired area on the busy L22 at the city port. The city had again justified the refusal with security concerns.

As a result, the demonstration dissolved. "Participants are asked to move peacefully away from the location. Keep the street free and follow the instructions of the police," said the call of the Rostock police, after the announcement of the organizers. By that time, several hundred potential participants had already gathered, who then marched through the city in smaller and larger groups.

Masks mandatory

Attendees report that only a few people on site would have complied with the mandatory mask requirement. It was similar at the demonstration a week ago. There, too, the event was broken up prematurely, but afterwards bottles and firecrackers were thrown at the police. Despite the cancellation, counter-protests take place on the New Market Square.

Protest in many cities

The regulatory authorities expect on Monday evening, however, even more events against the Corona measures in the country. Among them in the cities of Greifswald, Neubrandenburg, Waren, Neustrelitz, Anklam and Pasewalk.

Supplement 18.38 o’clock – Tense situation in Rostock

After the dispersal of the meeting at the city harbor, many of the participants move in groups through the city center of Rostock. Eyewitnesses report again of violent scenes. Once again, firecrackers would explode, participants of the prevented demo against the Corona measures had been doused with water. Meanwhile, the police tried to prevent the rival groups from clashing at the Neuer Markt.

Addendum 18.57 o’clock – Video from Pasewalk

In Neubrandenburg, counter-demonstrators have commemorated the deaths of the pandemic in the state with a candle action. Meanwhile, according to Nordkurier estimates, about 300 people have gathered in Pasewalk to demonstrate against the protective measures and a possible vaccination obligation. In Rostock, the police meanwhile confirmed the arrest of a 22-year-old man. He allegedly threw firecrackers at police officers.

Supplement 19.5 p.m. "Walk in Anklam

Even though opponents of the Corona measures had already repeatedly gathered in Anklam in recent weeks, a so-called walk was registered for the first time for Monday evening, and several hundred people took part in the demonstration procession. Meanwhile, police in Rostock have cordoned off entrances to the new market, presumably to prevent disruption of the counter-protest event.

Supplement 19.42 o’clock – Large demonstration in Neubrandenburg

The relaxation announced by Minister President Manuela Schwesig (SPD) in the evening is unlikely to appease the opponents of the measures. In Neubrandenburg, police estimate that nearly 2,000 people would have participated in the protest. There were also several hundred in the cities of the Muritz region. According to initial information from the police, there was an incident on the fringes of a demonstration in which Johannes Arlt (SPD), a member of the Bundestag, was attacked. Martin Klein, the organizer of the walk through the city center that followed the rally, expressed his enthusiasm. There was a lot of encouragement from the population, he explained. One tries to walk very consciously by residential areas and wants to be seen, so Klein.

However, there is also talk that some participants in the meeting were not connected with the Corona protests. From what the police conclude this, they initially left open.
