That’s what the personality test is all about

Suitability for the demanding police service is not only a question of your knowledge and physical fitness. Personality traits, your character traits and your individual traits also play a big role. After all, it would make little sense if you are very intelligent and physically top fit, but reluctant to work with people. Or are overwhelmed with conflict situations and quickly lose their nerves under stress.

Personality tests are not uncontroversial among experts. A major criticism is that a catalog of standard questions is hardly suitable for capturing and assessing a person’s personality in all its facets. There is also criticism that it goes too far when an employer wants to take deep insights into the soul life of his employees. On the other hand, the police profession is a very demanding job. In the service you will be confronted with the most diverse situations and the most diverse fates. Even if a situation is difficult or gets to you, you have to be able to deal with it and cope with it. So for the police service you need a strong personality. And through the personality test, the police want to find out whether you are also suitable for the police profession from a character point of view.

Here’s how you can prepare for the personality test

Personality tests come in different varieties in the context of the recruitment test. So personality tests are once part of the assessment center. In this case, they are conducted in the form of role plays and group tasks. In addition, a personality test can take place in the course of the interview test. But written personality structure tests are also an examination component in the selection process in some German states.

Regardless of the form, every personality test revolves around personal abilities, characteristics and traits. For this reason, there are basically no right or wrong answers in the personality test. But there are definitely answers that are a bit more clever than others. Which solution is favorable is sometimes quite easy to see through. If a question is about team spirit, for example, it wouldn’t be very smart to explain that you prefer to work independently or are happy to leave unpleasant tasks to others. After all, police work is always teamwork and your colleagues must be able to rely on you blindly, just as vice versa. But you will not immediately recognize what is at stake in all questions. Sometimes you will also have to choose between several positive characteristics.

As far as preparation is concerned, it is often advised to simply let the personality test come to you and answer spontaneously, from the gut. This strategy can work. It is better, however, if you use psychological testing methods. Because the principle behind personality tests is similar and often comparable questions are also asked. Once you understand the principle behind the questions, it will be easier for you to see what is behind each question. Of course, this does not mean that you should commit yourself to an answer pattern or learn answers by heart. A positive evaluation of the personality test will not be of much use to you if it turns out in the assessment center or during the interview that your answers have little to do with your character and appearance. Your preparation should be more about getting to grips with the test procedures as such. And developing a sense of what’s important.

This is what you can expect from the personality test

If the personality test is done in writing, you may encounter the questions in different versions. However, there are four very common types of test.

1. Statements with a point scale

In this type of test you are confronted with different statements. And for each statement you have to mark on a scale to what extent you agree with the statement.

In the recruitment test, for example, it looks like this:

Personality test | personality structure test

1 = I do not agree at all. 5 = I absolutely agree.

Such questions refer to various personality traits that play an important role in the police service. Mostly it is about characteristics like

  • sociability and communication skills
  • Commitment and reliability
  • Flexibility
  • Assertiveness and self-confidence
  • Empathy
  • Team spirit
  • Ability to cope with stress and conflict
  • Motivation and willingness to perform

Try to identify what each question is asking about, and then select your rating accordingly. It is often advisable not to choose an extreme answer, but rather to decide on a gradation. However, you should better not get the idea to always tick only the average value. Because this could be interpreted as you not being able to decide or not wanting to decide. A good strategy is therefore to choose 2 or 4, depending on whether you agree or disagree with the statement. Because by grading you are committing yourself, but still leave room for limitations.

2. Situations with point scale

Another popular test type goes like this: A situation is described to you. Often it is a scene that can occur in this form at any time in everyday working life. There are several statements about the situation. Your task is then to select the gradation of the statement that most closely matches how you would behave in this situation.

In the recruitment test, this looks something like this:

You are on patrol with your colleague. You notice a vehicle that drives extremely slowly and also in serpentines. When you stop the vehicle, you realize that the obviously intoxicated driver is your brother. What do you do?

I explain to my colleague who the driver is and ask him to perform the control. Otherwise I stay in the background and take over the security of my colleague.

I carry out the control in the same way as any other control. I cannot take personal circumstances into account when on duty.

(-3 = I would definitely not behave like this. +3 = Exactly how I would behave.)

In such tasks, put yourself in the situation and try to find out which characteristics are particularly important in this situation. Be honest in your answer. But if in doubt, rather choose a gradation, not an extreme.

3. Statements with assessment

Instead of being confronted with statements on which you can express yourself in different gradations, it may well be that you have to confirm or deny statements.

In the recruitment test, this type of test appears like this:

I find it easy to approach others.

a) true b) true in part c) not true

I think good manners are important.

a) true b) partially true c) not true

Plans are good. But sometimes you have to be spontaneous.

a) true b) true in part c) not true

This type of test asks questions that can be divided into four broad groups. This is how the statements refer to

1.) the professional attitude, z.B. motivation, willingness to perform or leadership skills,

2.) the way of working, z.B. the sense of responsibility, the reliability or the creativity,

3.) the social behavior, z.B. communication skills, team spirit or empathy, and

4.) the personality, z.B. the resilience, the mental strength or the character.

Since you cannot grade the statements here, you are usually well advised to agree with the statements for the most part. However, you should also remain honest. Because if you present yourself too perfectly and without any weaknesses, no one will buy it. And if you don’t know what characteristic a statement might be about, you can play it safe with the middle ground.

4. Open questions

Another variant of personality tests comes in the form of questions that seem harmless at first glance. These questions ask you about preferences, hobbies or other things.

In the setting test, the whole thing looks like this, for example:

Who are your three biggest models?

What do you see as the three greatest challenges of today’s world?

Please name your three favorites!

Of course, there are no right or wrong, better or worse answers to these questions. Finally, it is a matter of your own personal preferences and views. However, you should consider which picture you draw of yourself by your answers. How do you appear to the person reading your answers?? What impression does she get from you? And does the picture that emerges fit an aspiring police officer?

Conclusion of the personality test

You do not have to be afraid of the personality test. And you don’t have to worry about getting minus points either. Through the personality test, the police would like to get to know you as a person. And find out whether you have what it takes to be a good cop. In contrast to the PC test, you can take more time with your answers, because there is often no time limit. In addition, you usually do not have to solve the tasks one after the other, but can determine the order yourself. However, you should not dawdle. Because at some point the examiner will end the test.

To help you gain confidence, practice with online tests. This will not only teach you the typical questions and task types. But you will more easily see through what lies behind a question. Otherwise, the following applies: Remain honest! Keep in mind that you may be asked about your statements at the interview. Also, it will stand out if in reality you have little to do with the person you pretended to be in the test. And: Show your true colors. If you always tick the middle ground, you give the impression that you do not want to commit yourself. Therefore, only choose the middle answer if you cannot assess the question. Otherwise, you will fare well if you take a stand, but in a graduated manner. This way you commit yourself and at the same time leave room to put your attitude into perspective.
