Noise protection within your own 4 walls it’s that easy!

Since I often work in a home office, I asked myself: what can I do to "noise-proof" my home and isolate it as best I can from all kinds of environmental noise. You can find my tips and interesting suggestions here.

Sound waves are the be-all and end-all! We want to contain these as well as possible and not let them into our room. After all, the main thing is not to let noises from the outside into the apartment, study or bedroom. However, it also works the other way around. That means we are able with simple Do it Yourself methods also to let no more sound come out. All it takes is a little diligence and in most cases not more than 100 €. Let’s get started!

What is noise actually?

Noise is something that we subjectively perceive differently. If we look at the subject before the physical aspect, from the point of view of acoustics it is first of all about auditory signals, which are transmitted by waves (so-called sound waves) through a suitable medium. In most cases of our life it is the air we breathe. Noise transmission, but can also be transmitted by other media, such as sound. Metal (triangle) or water (sounds of whales) are transported. I would like to go into more detail in a separate article.

Noise in our perception is primarily any sound that is perceived as too loud. As already mentioned, each person has a different perception and thus decides individually whether a noise is within the tolerance threshold of pleasant or is perceived as disturbing, i.e. noise. A good example of this is loud music, which one person may find incredibly disturbing and another may not perceive the noise as such, but as very lively and something beautiful.

In physics, however, loudness is not measured according to a subjective sensation, but in terms of sound pressure. This sound pressure is then expressed in decibels (dB). Another important factor is the frequency, i.e. the wavelength in which the sound propagates. Too much and continuous noise can lead to serious illnesses. Since it is well known that noise is harmful to the body in the long run, you should avoid noise as much as possible. Besides the health aspect, it can of course also be interesting for other reasons to bring "quiet" into your home. If you count yourself to one of the following groups, then, this article could be exciting for you:

  • People in the home office
  • For maximum concentration, it should be quiet at your home workplace
  • You never want to use earplugs again and you cannot sleep relaxed with them?
  • For recovery and prophylaxis against further damage, rest is the best remedy.
  • Your Home is your Castle! There is no place like home, make yourself comfortable.
  • You’re in a band and don’t have a basement or rehearsal space? No problem, with the following tips your neighbors won’t hear a thing.
  • The other way around also works, of course. Don’t let the noise and chaos of your roommates into your sacred 4 walls in the first place.
  • Protect your loved ones and give them peace and quiet.

Installation of most of the items listed above is relatively simple and doesn’t require a great deal of manual dexterity. The only important thing is to make sure that you buy the materials that are most suitable for your room or object. Above all, the right quantities are crucial. You’ll probably only need a draft stopper and door insulation, but you’ll probably need a larger amount of fiberglass insulation or a sufficient amount of nap foam for that.

To make the decision easier for you, it is useful to know the difference between Soundproofing and Sound absorption to keep in mind.

What is sound absorption?

There are many exciting things happening with sound absorption:

  • a part of the sound energy penetrates the material (e.g. the wall)
  • another part is reflected back into the room
  • another part is converted into heat energy and absorbed in the material

Sound absorption is not about keeping noise in a room or preventing it from leaking out or in. It is much more about preventing the sound from flying wildly around the room, and thereby having to deal with bspw. Recording devices interfere. This is why you see those egg carton-like foam covers in studios. If we really want it to be quiet, we turn to sound insulation.

What is sound insulation?

Soundproofing, as the name suggests, is nothing more than the attenuation of sound by a suitable material. We can distinguish in sound insulation between airborne sound insulation and impact sound insulation. The first is achieved by the above-mentioned products, and the second, for example, by the use of a sound absorbing material. by a carpet or the floor itself. Sound insulation can also be achieved through the sound absorption described above. So by radiating the sound. A very good example of sound attenuation is screaming into a pillow. If you do this, then you are actively practicing soundproofing. Your pillow absorbs the sound waves produced by your vocal cords. The result is a much quieter scream than the one without the cushion in front of it.

So if you want to implement your project, think about what you want to do with the sound, the noise. Do you want bspw. build your own studio, then you want to absorb the sound bspw. with the help of nubby foam (link to Amazon). If, on the other hand, you want to prevent noise from outside coming into your room, then you probably want to provide soundproofing, for example. by the mentioned curtain (link to Amazon).
