Interview | Paul Drux after the European Handball Championship "When the coach called me, I didn’t think twice"

Picture: imago images/wolf-sportfoto
Foxes star Paul Drux actually wanted to watch the European Handball Championship from the sofa. But because of numerous Corona cases in the DHB team, he suddenly had to play himself in the jersey of the national team. In the rbb|24 interview, he talks about his experiences.
rbb|24: Paul Drux, the most important question first: Are you okay?? Are you healthy and fit?
Paul Drux: Yes, all is well! I am negative. Nowadays, that’s an indication. Also physically everything is okay.
Your foxes teammate Fabian Wiede tested positive last week. What went through your mind in relation to your own health when you heard about it?
I must honestly say that I was less worried because I was only positive in December. Thus I had the hope that my defenses protect me from it still a little bit. And you can almost no longer stop it basically. But for Fabi it was of course a huge shock, because we were tested negative all the time. And at the last test it came out.

Foxes manager – Hanning praises German national handball team for European Championship performance
You had actually cancelled your participation in the run-up to the European Championship and wanted to spare your operated knee. Then the national coach had to increase during the tournament because there were more and more corona cases in the German team and he turned to you (Note. d. Red.: In total, there were 18 infected people in the German delegation during the tournament weeks and immediately afterwards). How was it: Did he have to convince you?
No! I can answer that clearly, because I had told the coach in advance of my decision that he could call me if anything was wrong. My main concern was that I wanted to use the preparation to make up for the deficits I had due to my knee surgery. But of course I was still ready to play, just not one hundred percent fit yet. He hesitated a bit with me, but in the end he called me and then I didn’t think twice.
There was talk of logistical feats of strength during the European Championship. For example, there should have been individual transports and separate whereabouts of team members to minimize the risk of infection. How did you experience the everyday life of the European Championship and what was so special there??
Yes, it was totally crazy, because you were in a single room the whole time. At least for the eight days I was there. Before that, the guys had more to do with each other, just because of the training. But when we were there, we were completely isolated. You ate alone and then really only saw the other guys for the game. That was it. That was of course quite bleak then.
How was it tried to come together as a team despite these circumstances and to create a good team chemistry??
Of course, we tried to make the best of it. It started with bringing food to the people who were lying in the room and didn’t come out and asking around. And maybe brought them a coke to keep them happy. That did a lot of good and developed the team spirit very well. And what else is there to do?? We always had a bit of fun in our Whatsapp group. Otherwise, you were always relatively busy with yourself in the room and tried to distract yourself as much as possible and to prepare professionally for the game despite the difficult circumstances.

Corona ticker of the regional top teams – Julian Ryerson of Union Berlin tested positive for Corona
Corona cases are also piling up in regional sports: Here are all the latest developments surrounding the infections among professional teams from Berlin and Brandenburg.
How did you distract yourself?
I still had time to write an article for the university at the beginning. So I could distract myself quite well. And then at some point football came. You always find something you can do.
When you think about the circumstances under which the European Championship had to take place, the staging was then a mistake?
Difficult to say. One always sees only the sporting point of view and then also all the cases. If that’s the only thing that plays into the decision, then I think it’s clear. But there are other things as well. There are also contracts and these are certainly always economic things that you can’t really estimate. That’s why I always have a hard time with it. As a player you are the last one to decide something like that and give your expertise to it.
But the sporting side of things has taken a back seat. Do you think that handball as a sport has suffered image damage by hosting the tournament under these circumstances??
I think that is a bit double-edged. I think we as a team were able to make the best out of this situation and still made it fun for the spectators at home. On the other hand, it’s hard to explain when you have a lot of rules here in Germany and a very restricted life due to the pandemic, and yet you’re playing in a tournament where a lot of positive things have come out. I can understand that some people don’t like it.
Away from the Corona situation: What sporting conclusions can be drawn from the performance of the DHB team? (Note. d. Red.The team finished in seventh place)?
We have seen many players who have played their first tournament and who have a lot of potential. I just hope that if they stay together like this over the years, that something will develop and grow together that can stand up to stressful situations. Because in these really stressful situations, where it’s all about the little things, that’s where we still had our deficit. That must be said unfortunately.

Viktoria Berlin between Corona and relegation fight – optimism instead of crisis mood
Viktoria Berlin’s third league season began like a frenzy and washed the promoted team up to first place in the table. Then followed a sporty downswing to which now also still corona-conditioned play cancellations came. The club still remains true to itself.
Qualifying for the 2023 World Cup begins in the spring, and the European Championship will be held in Germany the following year. Where do you see room for improvement in the DHB team with regard to these landmark competitions??
We have to create continuity. For example, the teams at the top have now managed to do the same. You have to develop a blind understanding and that can only be achieved through a lot of training, in which automatisms develop. We can only do that if we stay together for a long time. Therefore I see it quite positively. I think the national coach could also see that the new players, who were playing for the first time, were able to make their mark on the game. Something can definitely develop there in the future. Especially with a view to 2024, which is an absolute highlight year for us.
Who of the newcomers has excited them personally the most?
Unfortunately, I could not see most of them for so long. But Julian Koster has shown everyone why the national coach has invited him. But I also thought Lukas Zerbe and Mertens were strong. I think they all did a good job.
Let’s look ahead to the club season. What does the European Championship and the return of the many and partly overplayed European Championship players mean for the upcoming daily league life of your foxes??
First of all, we can only hope that everyone clears their heads quickly. Because having a highlight year like that and then playing in the Bundesliga again is difficult. And that no injuries develop from it, because it was of course also physically very strenuous. In addition, of course, the Corona situation and that it is now not further into the Bundesliga and it may lead to game interruptions there again. But now, of course, it’s up to the players who are already here with their clubs to take the strain a bit to spare the others.

Cottbus handball coach Stephan Swat – Doctors had almost given up on him
Stephan Swat’s life was hanging by a thread. After a Corona illness, the doctors gave him hardly any chance of survival. But he fought his way back and is now nominated as a handball personality 2021. By Andreas Friebel
What is particularly important now in order to catch up with the league leaders again??
We have to manage to put absolute aggressiveness and the will to win into every game. The way we actually played almost the whole first half of the season. Even against opponents who are supposedly worse. We have to play our game and not stop after 45 minutes.
What is in it this season?
The last two games have already hurt us (Note. d. Red: The foxes played a draw against Balingen and lost against Melsungen). We left a little bit of air there. That was a bit unnecessary. Nevertheless, I think we can work our way up again. The start is very important now. We have a lot of important games and hope that we can keep our position in the EHF Cup.
Will you find time to watch the Winter Olympics?
I hope! I actually watch every Olympic Games – no matter if summer or winter. But this year a bit ambivalent.
In which respect ambivalent?
On the one hand the political situation in China and on the other hand the fact that there is not so much snow in Beijing at this time of the year. But the athletes can’t help it. This has to be discussed on a different level. I wish all the best to the athletes and they deserve it with their achievements. And that’s why I’m cheering for them from the couch, of course.
