Free working time calculator – ideal for daily working hours

38 5 hours a week daily working time - why is it so popular?

Many workers are employed in a relationship where they do not have to document their own working hours. There are many ways to do this. On the one hand, it may be due to the working time model. As an employer, you do not have to record any time in the case of trust-based working hours. It is the same when the foreman on the construction site writes down the working hours for all the workers assigned to him. If he leaves the construction site, his employees also leave the site, which is why the recorded working time remains the same.

However, many employees still want to know how long they work on average each day and therefore look for a working time calculator. We have summarized here the most common models including a table where you can see exactly how many hours you have to work per day on average

38.5 hour week popular especially in the skilled trades sector

Many outsiders probably wonder why one is supposed to work exactly 38.5 hours in a week. However, this is explained quite simply. Due to the break regulation, it is permitted in Germany to work up to 6.5 hours at a stretch without having to take a break. This is mainly used by the craft industry. From Monday to Thursday you usually work 8 hours and on Friday only 6.5 hours.

The advantage is that you don’t have to take a break on Friday and can enjoy the weekend a little earlier than other professions. With a weekly working time of only 38.5 hours one does not have here however the earnings, which an employee has with same earnings and a working time of 40 hours in the week. So you have to decide for yourself whether you prefer free time or one or two euros more in your account.

In the office, the worker works 40 hours a week

In most office jobs, you work a regular 40 hours a week. This system has been tried and tested for years and is easy to use. Similar to the 38.5 hour work week model, there are also workers who want to go home a little earlier on Friday.

Therefore they have to put the 1.5 hours elsewhere. This can be evenly spread over all other 4 days, resulting in a daily working time of 8 hours and 23 minutes. Many work on Monday regular and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday half an hour longer each day. This is easier to calculate and you do not have to work more than the usual 8 hours right at the beginning of the week.

Many building cleaners hire marginally employed persons

In the cleaning business there are a few special cases. Many employees are hired there as marginal employees. This, of course, gives a completely different picture than, for example, the employment of 38.5 hours.

Low-income employees mostly work in dependence of the minimum wage. You must not earn more than the 450 euros set by the state, which may cause problems in the classification. In the building cleaning industry, the minimum wage has been set since 1. January 2018 at 10.30 euros in the west and 9.55 euros in the east. If one divides this hourly wage now by the maximum earnings of 450 euros, then results in a number of hours of 43,5 or. 47 hours. Here, too, one tries to assign the hired workers rather on several days. The common models prescribe a 4-day week with 3 hours per day each. That is exactly 12 hours a week, which usually means that the maximum working time is adhered to exactly. Otherwise, either one shift more or one shift less must be completed.

FYI: With the regular minimum wage of 8.84 euros, the maximum monthly working time is 50.5 hours. That’s why people here often work 6.5 hour shifts. Here one can work then up to 7 times, whereby then still exactly 5 hours would remain. This

Part-time work is still popular

It’s a little easier to structure with part-time employees. They are only allowed to work 20 hours a week. This is exactly half of what a full-time employee would be expected to do.

However, most part-time employees do not work 8 hours a day but, for example, 4 hours a day for 5 days a week. This makes sense especially for cleaning companies, since some locations have to be cleaned several times a week. Thus a cleaner is more valuable for the company if she works 5 days a week.

Other professions have part-time employees work 3 times a week, where the average work time is 6 hours and 40 minutes. For working students, this employment relationship is firmly integrated into the law. In this way, the state ensures that the student has enough time in addition to his professional activity to attend lectures in his course of study. More about working student can be found here.

With the working hours calculator you have the working time wonderfully in the view

The working hours calculator shown above has the advantage that you can immediately see how many hours you work on average per day. However, these are of course only theoretical average figures. For example, one cannot work exactly 7 hours and 42 minutes on average per day. Nevertheless, it is a good indicator to determine whether the respective chosen employment relationship and daily working hours are compatible with private life. Who would like to see a few exemplary divisions of a working week on the basis the total weekly hours is correct here:

Record times live to have more accurate insight

Everybody knows it. One would like to work only 38.5 hours per week, which equals an average of 7 hours and 42 minutes on 5 days. But then comes a call from the boss. With the words "This needs to be finished today" you continue the work and end up with far more than the 38.5 hours you had hoped for.

To ensure that nothing falls by the wayside when recording times, it is advisable to document working times with a modern working time recording system. In this way, especially the employee can prove that he really worked the specified time. In addition, the employer can better understand the times and, in case of doubt, retrieve them in a flash if there is ever a disagreement.

This creates a level of transparency for both parties that is second to none.
