Traces of thc remain in the blood for over a month: alcohol and cannabis: this is how long toxins remain detectable in the body

Even if you feel like you’ve long since sobered up after the previous night’s party, beware of a checkup. The metabolites of alcohol, nicotine and THC can be detected for longer than some people would like.

Nicotine, alcohol or cannabis use leave traces in the body. Although it gradually breaks down the ingredients, the breakdown products can still be found in blood, urine, or hair afterwards. Even if the intoxication effect has faded, a test can still lead to unpleasant results.

Even those who feel long sober again after the party of the night before still have alcohol in their blood. It remains detectable there for an average of twelve hours. In urine it is 48 hours. Traffic offenders suspected of drinking and driving will be ordered to take a urine test within 24 hours during a medical-psychological examination (MPU). This measures the breakdown product ethyl glucuronide formed in the liver. Stuff stays in your hair for as long as three months.

The drug remains in the blood for 14 days, and the metabolite THC-COOH can be detected in the urine for as long as a month. In continuous users even 77 days have been measured. THC residues remain stored in hair follicles for several months.

When smoking, nicotine enters the liver through the bloodstream. There it is metabolized into cotinine and has a half-life of 16 to 22 hours in blood and urine, while nicotine itself is no longer detectable after 30 minutes. Cotinine remains in the hair for three to five days. However, the test cannot distinguish whether the person tested has actually smoked or perhaps worn a nicotine patch.

The hallucinogen has been banned in Germany since 1971, because even small amounts lead to increased sensory perceptions, including a loss of the sense of space and time.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) can be found in the blood for up to twelve hours and in the urine for up to three days.

Cocaine interferes with the metabolism of neurotransmitters in the central nervous system and causes certain messenger substances in the so-called "pleasure center" of the brain to increase. This causes the intoxication.

Even with cocaine, detectability and duration of effect are not to be confused with each other. Smoked crack acts within eight to ten seconds and maintains the high for five to ten minutes. Intravenously, the influence of the drug sets in after 30 to 45 seconds and subsides again after ten to 20 minutes. When snuffed, the drug takes effect for half to three quarters of an hour.

Cocaine is not detectable in blood or urine for a long time. The drug is mainly broken down in the liver and excreted in the urine. An examination therefore reveals the degradation product benzoylecgonine, which remains in the body much longer. It can be detected in urine for up to four days, and in blood for three days after consumption.

It is the basis of one of the most dangerous drugs in the world: crystal meth. Methamphetamine is almost completely absorbed in the stomach after consumption. Because it accumulates mainly in fatty tissue, it remains detectable in urine for one to three days, but in blood for a maximum of 24 hours.
