A good resume shows the recruiter that you are the right man or woman for the job. Therefore, your resume should be revised for each application and adapted to the advertised position. However, a few basic rules apply to the structure in any resume:

  • The length of the perfect resume: Two pages maximum. If you have little work experience, one page is sufficient.
  • Personal information in the resume: When writing a resume, you should start by stating your full name, date and place of birth, marital status (single or married), address, and contact information- As a rule, telephone number and e-mail address. If you can rarely be reached by landline, give the cell phone number.

Choose a short, accurate position description and include the most important three to five tasks you performed. Young applicants who have not yet had a full-time job may indicate relevant internships, student projects with practical relevance or suitable part-time jobs here.

For school and university degrees, include the grade if it is good enough. Career starters with a university degree may also state the title of their thesis.
  • Other qualifications You may write everything in the resume that is relevant for the open position. This includes further education, language skills (please specify how well you speak the language), stays abroad, computer skills or driving licenses, if they are required for the job.
  • Who- where- what: Don’t forget to mention the period of time, the place and the company for all stations (activities and further education). To name the training institute.
  • Special case hobby: Can personal leisure activities be included in the resume or must they be left out?? Here, too, the golden rule applies: You should only write your hobbies in your resume if they fit the advertised position. Photography is a good choice when applying for an apprenticeship as a media designer. Sports are always useful if you have been successful in them and have won championships, for example. This shows that you can achieve the goals you have set for yourself. Social commitment is also well received by many recruiters.

  • Contact information is incorrect or missing. Imagine: The personnel manager wants to invite you for an interview, but instead of your voice he hears on the phone only "no connection under this number". Missing digits in the cell phone number, letter-twists in the e-mail address- nothing is more annoying in a resume. Unless you completely forget this information when writing your resume. This is of course even worse.
  • The resume is confusing. If the recruiter can’t see at first glance where to find your work experience, you’ve done something wrong when writing your resume.   • You only mention years in your resume. This is too vague. Many applicants give only the years in order to hide gaps in the curriculum vitae.   • The resume contains irrelevant information. If you write irrelevant information in the resume, you reduce the value of the really important points. Unimportant are, for example, hobbies that have nothing to do with the job, your elementary school or a trivial side job.
  • In the curriculum vitae you will find careless mistakes. Misspellings and incorrect grammar do not show the recruiter that you work carefully. Be concentrated when you write your resume.
  • The formulations are incomprehensible. What you write in the resume must always be clear. Give the resume to at least one other person to read.
  • The resume contains exaggerations or even lies. Incorrect information will be noticed when reading the resume or at the latest during the job interview. By the way, lies in your resume are still a reason for dismissal, even if you have already got the job.
