Applying for a new job is always associated with excitement and uncertainty. After all, not only the chances of getting the new job depend on the quality of the application documents. It is not uncommon for a job change to have an impact on your entire life as well. A perfect application is therefore often the ambitious goal of an applicant. - A perfect application usually consists of a one-page cover letter, a tabular resume, and supporting attachments.
- You can build the perfect application according to DIN 5008. This is the official standard for any kind of business letter, so also for application documents.
- The cover letter serves to convince the hiring manager that you are the right candidate for the job and that the company is a perfect fit for you.
- The resume shows, in full, your qualifications and the achievements you have made so far. It serves the personnel manager for a rough assessment and is often read first.
- The attachments include references, certificates and other relevant evidence. These should be enclosed well sorted and with a list of attachments.
Writing the perfect application
For a perfect application, formalities have a high priority. This concerns the structure of the documents as well as the formatting, for example according to DIN 5008. Complete application documents usually consist of the following elements:

- References and work samples
When it comes to the cover page, there is disagreement about whether it is considered mandatory for a perfect application. Also controversial is the role of the photo, since according to the Equality Act, appearances must not influence the application process. In practice, however, the perfect application photo always enables an emphatic first impression to be made.
A perfect cover letter
A perfect application naturally includes a perfect cover letter. Unlike the very formal resume, the text of the cover letter gives you more freedom to express your personality and motivation. Under no circumstances should the cover letter be just about repeating your qualifications.
Use the cover letter to show why you are the best choice for the job and why the company in question is the best fit for you. Don’t be afraid to be a little passionate about it. Standard formulations have been read a thousand times by the personnel officer. Get a little creative, but not unserious.
Always formulate positively and forward. Write what you imagine yourself doing professionally in the future and not what you thought was bad at your old employer. Also, focus on the win-win and not just on your advancement.
A perfect application takes time. Don’t be discouraged if your first three drafts of the cover letter don’t turn out perfectly right away. Rushing is not a good advisor. Let friends and family take a look at your application. Above all, be sure to check the cover letter and all other documents for correct spelling and grammar.
A perfect resume
An optimally structured resume is indispensable for a perfect application. In most cases, it will be read first – or at least skimmed over. On the basis of the points in the resume, personnel officers can roughly sort out whether you are at all eligible for the job.
As a rule, the perfect resume is structured in tabular form and lists the most recent position first (American version). Put the dates on the left side, the facts on the right side. Refrain from using awkward wording in your resume.
You cannot change your own resume afterwards. However, you can choose which events you want to include in your resume and how much space you want to devote to them. Gaps in your resume as well as periods of unemployment are not taboo. Mention these periods openly and honestly, but do not get lost in explanations. The recruiter will certainly ask you about this again in the job interview.
Attachments to the perfect application
Of course, a perfect application also includes attachments such as job references, certificates and letters of recommendation. Unlike the cover letter and resume, however, you have not written the attachments yourself. Rather, they serve as proof of the statements you have made about your qualifications.
What you can do, however, to make the attachments fit the perfect application: Get the loose sheets in order. List the attachments chronologically and write them in the same order as an attachment list at the end of the cover letter.
You don’t have to include every snippet you can find as an attachment. Select the most important evidence of your suitability. These can vary depending on the position. In any case, include job references and the vocational training certificate or the university degree certificate.
Effect of a perfect application
On average, a recruiter will only devote about two to five minutes to even a perfect application – at least on the first go-round. You have little room for maneuver and must be convincing in the shortest possible time. Remember that even a personnel manager is only a human being who is susceptible to psychological tricks.
When writing your perfect application, make sure that the reader gets a positive impression even when skimming over it. Positive words, successes and achievements must immediately catch the eye. There should be no superfluous information. Short and crisp, is the motto.
If you want to highlight what you’ve accomplished in past projects, the AHA method (task-action-completion) is recommended. Mention concisely what the challenge was, how you solved it and what result you were able to achieve, ideally backed up with figures.
