In one of our recent Tech Lolz articles, we had a really good laugh at a guy who tried to create an animated GIF using a single image and Paint. However, to create any kind of animation, you need at least two different images. If you render them one after the other, you will get an animated sequence. Today we thought it would be a good idea to show you an easy way to create your own animated GIF file with your own images, using a free application called GIMP. Let’s dive:
What is GIMP and where to get it
GIMP is a free image manipulation software available for anyone to download and use. You can download it from the official website or from Softpedia. We have version 2.8.14 used.
After downloading, run the installer.
How to create an animated GIF file with your own images
Before you proceed, you should first select the images you want to use to create your animated GIF file. For an easier process, we recommend that you copy them all into a separate folder. In our example, we will use two images and copy them to a folder on the desktop, which we will call GIF Project Called.
To make this as easy as possible, we also recommend that you rename all images with sequential numbers. For each image, use the number that corresponds to the location in your animation. For example, the first image in your GIF will be named 1, the second 2, the third 3, and so on.
Open GIMP now. On your desktop, you should see some windows similar to the ones below.
Open in the main window of GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP) the menu File And choose Open .
This action starts the dialogue" Open image ". Navigate to the folder where you saved your images. Then select the first image you want to use for the animated GIF. In our case the image would be 1.png from our GIF project folder . After you have selected the first image, click or tap on Open .
GIMP opens the selected image.
Next, you need to do the same for all other images that are part of your animated GIF file. In the window with the first image open the menu File . Click or tap then on Open as layers .
Navigate to the folder where you saved the images and open the second image you want to use for the animated GIF file.
If you want to add more frames to the GIF file, repeat the last step: open the menu File, click or tap Open as Layer and select the next image in your sequence.
When all the images have been added, open the menu Filter, go to Animation and click or tap Playback, to preview how your animated GIF file will look like.
Click or tap in the newly opened window on" Play", to preview your animated GIF file.
To exit the preview, simply close the Animation Playback- Window.
All you need to do to complete creating your own animated GIF file is to save it. Open the File again and click or tap Export as .
Select in the window" Image export" select the location where you want to save your GIF file, enter a name for it, and (very important) make sure you select the "extension".gif" at its end to specify. Then click or tap on Export .
GIMP opens a new dialog called Export image as GIF . The only thing you need to do here is to make sure that you select the option" As Animation" menu activate .
If you want, you can also set the delay that will be used between frames of your animation, and whether or not you want the GIF animation to loop forever. When you have selected all the settings you want, click or tap on Export .
depending on the number of images used and their size, you will have to wait a few minutes for GIMP to save your animated GIF.
Your animated GIF file is now saved and ready to be used anywhere.
As you can see, it is very easy to create animated GIF files with your own images. All you need to do is a few clicks or taps with a good image editing software like GIMP.
