In Europe it is no problem, being on the road with a car in another country. The unit of measurement applies everywhere Kilometers per hour, briefly km/h. But that quickly changes when you get into the USA drives. The units of measure for speeds are not kilometers per hour, but it says miles per hour. But do not panic, on tuningblog can be helped directly. We have a calculator to be able to convert the speeds.
The metric system is used in the USA and some other countries not been taken over. So far, so good. But what does that mean exactly? The miles per hour on the signs like to come along with "mph". also the abbreviation "mi" and "mi/h" can be found. But it all means the same. It is the Mile and in Europe you calculate instead in kilometers. But now, as a driver in the USA, you are faced with a problem if you want to drive across the highway. How to convert? Here three possibilities open up for you. You can convert in your head, you can find a Calculator to the help or you use our Conversion tool and reduce the resistance and effort considerably.
This is the mile!
The international mile, which is mentioned again and again in movies with American origin, corresponds today exactly to the international mile 1.609344 kilometers. So you can say that "1 mph" exactly "1.609344 km/h" are. This is understandable if you know the number. This number has its origin in ancient Rome. "Mille Passus" is what the Romans called it, which resulted when you lined up five feet (29.64 cm) and got 1.482 meters out of it. Other units were based on the multiple of a minute of arc of the equator or meridian. This Arc minute was used to define a nautical mile, in 1929, and was equal to 1.852 kilometers. But the smaller mile, which is valid since 1959, resulted from the English Mile/Statute Mile. An object moving at 1 mph covers a distance of that English mile or statute mile. The conventional mile is born, which we still encounter today.
Can you not simply convert it?
Yes, you can. A bit rough, but it works. You take the number that is shown on the mph signs and multiply it with the factor 1.6 of the kilometer measure. Thus one comes nevertheless quite solidly on a value, with which one can work. 100 mph is about 160 km/h. The reverse is also true. If you want to get from kilometers to miles, you have to convert the kilometers to miles divide by 1.6, you have the corresponding number. Our tool embedded above is more accurate and not everyone is comfortable with relying on their own calculation skills, as it is somewhat inaccurate, especially in moments of stress. With the tool you know when they were speeding and when not.
You may of course use our tool NOT during the ride. If you are in the USA on the way, then you will probably move a car with a suitable speedometer anyway. Many European vehicles can also be set in the on-board menu to mp/h or you can use a Additional display are activated. Also deliver mobile Navigation systems or Dashcams often a suitable advertisement.
Across the USA by car!
If you book a car locally, it usually has both units of measurement inserted in the speedometer, because Americans also know that Europeans use the metric system. The mph figure is often found on the outer circle of the speedometer, the km/h figure on the inside. But you’ll get used to the miles faster than you might think.
Of course, that was far from it!
