Trip cancellation on mein schiff 2, partial cancellation at short notice on mein schiff 1 due to corona falls

19.01.2022 (updated news from 18.01.2022) – Franz Neumeier

Omikron shakes up the schedules of TUI Cruises. After a part of the Caribbean voyage of Mein Schiff 2 was already cancelled at the weekend, the shipping company has now cancelled the current voyage completely. And for the upcoming Caribbean cruise of Mein Schiff 1 from Bremerhaven on 19. January many passengers were virtually unloaded.

TUI Cruises passengers are currently being affected by the cancellations at particularly short notice: only one or two days before departure do they find out that their vacation dreams have been shattered. Both Mein Schiff 1 and Mein Schiff 2 are affected longer Caribbean cruises: Mein Schiff 2 is sailing on a 14-day Caribbean itinerary, while Mein Schiff 1 is sailing from and to Bremerhaven for as long as 34 days.

Cancellation two days before departure: Reduced number of passengers for the 34-day Caribbean voyage de Mein Schiff 1

Because more people on the preceding long-term Caribbean voyage from Bremerhaven are apparently infected with Covid-19 than previously known, TUI Cruises is reducing passenger capacity for the subsequent 34-day Caribbean voyage of Mein Schiff 1 from Bremerhaven on 19. January.

TUI Cruises therefore canceled many passengers’ trips just three days before departure. TUI Cruises formulates in the cancellation letter: "… to cancel the voyage for a smaller group of guests at short notice." As a selection criterion for whom to cancel, they had chosen the time of booking. So the later a passenger had booked the trip, the higher up he was on the cancellation list. Advertising

TUI Cruises writes in a press statement: "Against the background of the latest findings and experiences of recent weeks, we have decided at short notice to reintroduce stricter occupancy limits on longer voyages to protect guests and crew. As the number of guests on the cruise planned for 19. As the capacity of the Mein Schiff 1 voyage planned for January is currently higher than this, we have decided, after considering all options, to cancel the voyage for a smaller group of guests at short notice."

The affected passengers are now to be refunded the cruise fare and receive a ten percent discount on the cruise portion (i.e., without the flight) of a new cruise to be booked with TUI Cruises.

On the Caribbean voyage of Mein Schiff 1, which was scheduled for 12. December 2021 had started in Bremerhaven, Covid 19 cases had occurred. On the return voyage across the Atlantic to Germany, the shore leave was cancelled on 14. January in Punta Delgada in the Azores. On the trip are, according to TUI Cruises 1.600 passengers and 800 crew members on board er Mein Schiff 1. The ship returned one day earlier than planned on 18. January back to Bremerhaven. According to the Nordsee-Zeitung, 131 people on the Caribbean voyage last tested positive for Covid-19.

Cancellation of the Mein Schiff 2 Caribbean cruise

The initially only partially canceled Caribbean cruise of Mein Schiff 2 – there also to reduce the number of passengers on board – TUI Cruises has now on 17. January completely canceled.

Initially, TUI Cruises had offered the 800 or so passengers on Mein Schiff 2, who embarked on 17. January were to board in Bridgetown, Barbados, canceled a day before departure. Mein Schiff 2’s 14-day Caribbean cruises depart from two ports: La Romana in the Dominican Republic and Bridgetown in Barbados. The cancellation affected only the 800 or so passengers who would have boarded in Bridgetown, while the cruise that had previously begun in La Romana was scheduled to continue.

Individuals had tested positive for Covid-19, TUI Cruises initially wrote in a statement as its reasoning. Covid-19 will affect important positions in the service area, so that the usual service can no longer be guaranteed. Disembarking some of the passengers in Bridgetown at the regular end of their cruise and not taking on any new passengers should reduce the number of passengers on board, so it would seem that the service could be provided for the smaller number of passengers as a result.

Previously, according to TUI Cruises, around 1.800 passengers on board, which equates to an occupancy rate of about 62 percent, moderate even for Corona times. Mein Schiff 2 offers regular seating for 2.894 passengers with double occupancy of cabins.

Now, however, TUI Cruises has canceled the trip completely and is also flying the remaining 939 passengers from Barbados on 18. and 19. January home early. For them, the cruise, which departs 14. January in La Romana began, lasted only three days.

According to current planning, Mein Schiff 2 is scheduled to return to service in the Caribbean on 28. January from La Romana and 31. January from Bridgetown.

Of course, customers of other shipping companies are not immune to cruise cancellations either. Numerous cruises are currently being canceled due to the effects of the Omikron variant of the Sars Cov-2 virus, which has infected many crew members in particular. Around a quarter of the world’s cruise ship fleet, which was still active until recently, is already at a standstill again, at least for a few weeks.
